It's a Shame

Today i was attending the International Conference for Assessor / Auditor at Borobudur Hotel Jakarta. According to the invitation, the event will start at 08:00 AM and i tried to arrive before that time. Precisely 07:31 AM i arrived at Flores Ballroom and i was shock because they did not even ready yet. The decorative welcome gate was not set up properly and the registration desks were not set up too.

I said to myself : "are these people giving their attention to this event seriously or not?". I just standing there and watching the event committee preparing the desks, the goody bags, the identification tag and the booklets. This is an International event and they manage it in an amateur way. It is the first shame.

08:20 AM the Master of Ceremony calling the delegates to be seated because the event was getting started. I just realize that the Conference loaded with research papers presentation by various researchers and keynote speakers (from India, Thailand, Indonesia and Europe). That was a big surprise for me because i do like listening to a research presentations.

First speaker was from India. His expertise as the important member of Quality Council of India told us that the from all of the ISO 9001:2000 clauses there were only two clauses that become less of the attention from some Certification Bodies. He present his research paper very good and gave me a wider perspective about Quality Management System. I admire him for what has he done.

Second speaker was from Indonesia. He is the Secretary General of *** . He have the doctoral title and at first i was excited to hear from an expert especially with the highest academic title. I always assumed that the higher someone's education the more critically their way of think. But in that day...i was wrong. Why? i will tell you why in my next paragraph.

He talked about Conformity Assessment and the Globalization (which is an interesting topic). But i was dissapointed. His english was not very good, especially he's a doctor. All i heard he was babbling, stuttering and using a massively wrong grammar like : "free trade will be fair trade if the compete is good" that is one of my example. I know and i understand that even my english is not very good at all but i found that his english is totally broken. He keep using word "increase" to explain about progress, development and programs like : "i want to ask all of you to increase the knowledge to auditors and increase the compete of auditor so that we can increase the compete and increase the way of auditors audit". What the hell???.

At first he talk about Globalization and then Free Trade but in the end he ask us to increase our knowledge in auditing and hopefully increase our way? what way? all of the people inside that ballrom were auditors! they know what they should do!. There were so many unrelevance theme in his speech. I sat on table number 11 there were 7 auditors with me they just smile and keep saying : "i can't understand what he said" , "what is he trying to say?" or "he should learn english more". Funny comments from them and i agree with what they said. The speaker, doctor speaker, must learn and try to become used to reading and speaking english more.

With all do respect sir...your english was damagely broken and i could not understand with any single word you say. All i hear is only : "increase". I know i have an average score of TOEFL but honestly, i can speak english better than him!. This is the biggest shame of this event. I was curious to see the foreign speaker faces when they listening to his presentation and one of them (i think from Europe) keep holding his chin, raising his eyebrows and looking around...signs of ignoring something or maybe signs of hardly to understand something.

With all do respect sir...as the Secretary General of *** you should have to speak english very fluently because you have a big responsibility in bridging between Indonesia's QMS interests and the other countries standard.

It is a SHAME
